Immediate needs were often put by the wayside as families struggled to keep food in their homes, acquire proper clothing, shoes, or gas money for transportation to and from mental health or doctor appointments. Overdue utility bills, home repairs and vehicle maintenance are often not deemed a priority. Students are impacted and so were our hearts. How do you learn and thrive when your basic needs aren’t being met? It was evident that providing for our families would take a village.
All students within the Wayne Highlands School District of Northeast Pennsylvania deserve the same opportunity to learn but due to financial hardship, food insecurity, and other challenges some children are put at a disadvantage. It Takes A Village uses the generous donations from their community to help these students with the critical resources they need to maintain a healthy learning environment.
When the basic needs of a family remain unmet, the atmosphere at home can be challenging. Within these households, students are at risk of neglecting their homework and studying and could become demotivated. It Takes A Village uses the donations from the community to help defray the costs of some basic family needs for those in crisis, in hopes of restoring a favorable learning environment for children.
The Weekend Backpack Food Program is available to K-12 students at WHSD. Please contact your school counselor for qualification information. Find out more about donation information below.
